Catarina’s weaving caught my eye a while ago when I was first starting Koromiko. I was impressed with her concern for the environmental impact of commercial dyes and huge use of water in the textile industry. The boundaries she sets herself in her work are strict, but the end result is something so incomparably beautiful and carefully considered.
Catarina hand weaves mostly throws and blankets, sometimes scarves and cushions, from her studio at Cockpit Arts in Deptford, UK. Her work is inspired by tribal textiles, vintage linen towels and grain sacks as well as by memories of textiles from her childhood like mattress ticking or antique kilims. Catarina chooses eco-friendly yarns like linen, hemp, wool and alpaca (all undyed/unbleached and sourced from the UK and Europe). Colored yarns are plant-dyed, recycled, second-hand (from donations) or the natural color of the animal fleece.
